Shockwave Therapy

What is it?

Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive and affordable treatment that promotes and accelerates the recovery of injured tissue such as tendons, ligaments, and bone. It is used to treat and relieve the pain associated with soft tissue conditions such as tendonitis, calcification in tendons, heel spurs, and myofascial pain.

How does it work?

An acoustic pulse is transferred into the affected soft tissue, stimulating the area on a cellular level. The controlled stimulation and re-injuring of tissues stimulate the body’s natural healing process resulting in faster healing and reduction in pain. It is often used in conjunction with chiropractic, physiotherapy, and massage therapy treatments and offered as an alternative to surgery.

Conditions Treated:

  • Plantar Fasciitis

    • One of the most common causes of heel pain. It is the inflammation of the fascia (connective tissue) on the bottom of your feet.

  • Rotator Cuff Tendonitis/ Tears

    • Overuse injury of the rotator cuff tendons causing local inflammation surrounding the tendons.

  • Achilles Tendonitis/ Tears

    • Overuse injury of the achilles tendon causing local inflammation surrounding the tendon.

  • Shin Splints

    • Commonly found in runners, dancers, and military recruits that have suddenly increased their training routine. The shin bone (tibia) is being excessively pulled on by the muscles and fascia surrounding it.

  • ITB Syndrome

    • When the Iliotibial Band becomes tight, irritated, or inflamed with overuse and repetitive knee extension and flexion, it causes additional friction to the outside of the knee when bending.

  • SI joint pain

    • Low back and tail bone pain that is usually related to the surrounding joints, ligaments, tendons, and muscles. Sometimes the pain can travel into the groin or even down the back side of the leg.

  • Calcific Tendonitis

    • Calcium built up inside the tendons (e.g. rotator cuff tendons) causing local inflammation and irritation.

  • Tennis Elbow

    • Inflammation, micro-tearing of the forearm muscles and tendons.

  • Jumpers Knee

    • Also known as tendonitis of the patellar tendon (the tendon that connects the knee cap to your shin.

  • Myofascial Pain Syndrome

    • Chronic pain disorder that involves sensitive muscle trigger points throughout different parts of the body.

Treatment Protocol

The average amount of sessions recommended is typically 3-6 or 6-8 sessions depending on the severity of the condition. A re-evaluation will take place after those sessions to determine whether or not more sessions are necessary.
